Should You Start a Planner or Journal Business in 2026?
Should you start a planner or journal company this year? If you've been sitting on the fence wondering whether to go for it, this post is going to help you get off the fence one way or the other!
And here's the honest spoiler alert. It is not a yes for everybody. There are very specific things you need to succeed in this space, and some things you might be surprised you don't need at all.
If we haven't met, my name is Polly Payne. I'm the CEO and founder of Horacio Printing, where I've been creating planners, devotionals, journals, and vision board kits for over 11 years. Since 2022, I've also been empowering other people to start their own paper product businesses through Print School, and hundreds of incredible students have brought their dreams to life. So let's walk through the honest breakdown together.
Is the Planner Market Too Saturated?
I get this question all the time, and my answer is yes and no. For generic, low effort products, yes, the market has plenty of that already. Please don't add more to the pile!
But for heart centric products? Products with a story, a mission, and intentional, beautiful design that help people experience a true breakthrough or simply spark joy? No, the market is not saturated for that. Not if you do it right. There is always room for products made with excellence and heart.
The 3 Things You Need To Succeed
1. A specific person you're selling to. Without knowing exactly who you're making this for, you will lose your path in the dark. This is the difference between a product with purpose and a Frankenstein file of random Canva templates that never gets printed.
2. A concept that comes from your story. The most successful student products I've seen, like the Abide Devotional and the Redeemed Self Journal, were born from their creators' real stories. Your story might be about who you were before the divorce, or at the start of a diagnosis, or your younger self who needed exactly this product. You don't have to be perfect to create something meaningful, but it does need to come from somewhere real.
3. A willingness to humble yourself and learn. Sometimes we start from zero. Zero email list, zero followers, zero experience. That is completely okay! What you need is the grit to learn something new. And the good news is you don't have to hack through the woods alone, because I've already walked the path and can show you the way through.
The 3 Things You Don't Need
1. You don't need a design degree. Inside Print School, I give you the training and templates to DIY your design, or you can hire one of the trusted design partners I've personally worked with.
2. You don't need a big audience. So many of my students started with no following at all. If you have an audience, wonderful, that's a leg up! But it is absolutely not a requirement.
3. You don't need a ton of money. Now, let me be honest with you, because I always will be. Product based businesses do cost money to start, and you want some cushion. If you're starting from zero savings or deep in debt, I'd actually recommend starting with a service based business first and stepping into products later. But you do not need to be wealthy to do this. Many of my students came in with tuition and a little cushion, and they made their dreams come true.
Real Students Who Started From Scratch
Let me show you what's possible! Norine created the Seasonal Lifestyle Planner and set a Kickstarter goal of $4,000. She was fully funded in the first 24 hours with just 58 backers. It only takes a small group of people who believe in your vision to fund your entire first print run.
Christina launched the Pocket Primer, a sweet little book that helps prime young readers, and funded in the first two hours. Her goal was $5,400, and she blew past $16,000 and was even selected as a Project We Love by Kickstarter!
And then there's Fatima, who came to Print School with a dream on her heart and created Her Becoming, a 12 month devotional about consistency and identity in Christ. Her Kickstarter was fully funded on day one, her Black Friday sale was a hit, and doors keep opening for her to speak and share her book at conferences and retreats. She told me it was the best investment she has ever made, and stories like hers are exactly why I do this. When God puts a dream in you, He doesn't do it to mock you. He wants to see it come to fruition.

Signs This Is a YES for You
You've had this dream bubbling up for over a year and it keeps knocking on the back of your mind. You have a story that you know needs to become a product. And you're a paper snob, which to me simply means you have an eye for excellence and you refuse to put something janky into the world. If you're nodding along, I think this is close to a yes for you!
Signs This Is NOT for You
If you're looking for a get rich quick scheme, this isn't it. Can you make great money with print? Absolutely, print is not dead! But good things take time, and fast does not last. This is also not for you if you're dead set on print on demand, because print on demand is low quality and too expensive to build a real business on. And finally, if you have no concept and no why, no heart behind the idea at all, then it's simply not a yes yet, and that's okay too.
